I bought dill at the farmers market last week
I put it in a pitcher around the fireplace
and let it dry
It works its magic on me as I am in the business of ordinary things
a simple olfactory delight
catching me unaware and suddenly
taking me back to grandpa's back yard
one of my saving graces of childhood
Today, it brought comfort unexpectedly
so many things on my mind that I have no power over
except for my reaction to them
and the dill stepped up
did its job
brought me to a place of safety
and a simpler time
where I just excepted its fragrance around me
connected to a bent over gray haired man
who spoke little
I loved him so
and the dill brought him to me in a magic way
I am at the point where I think I will stop praying
no one is listening
and my heart gets broken over and over again
but the dill
told me differently
remember the love always
and have faith
don't stop.
ReplyDeletei am fairly certain the dill itself
is a little reminder tha you are not alone
in your pain.
Thanks Brian. No I know I am not alone in this pain. But weary is not good place to stand in.
ReplyDeleteHi Suz. I love your prose! And, I love the smell of fresh dill....it's food for Swallowtail caterpillars and I watched two of those little buggers devour 3 dill plants in no time.....right down to nothing but sticks coming out of the ground.....I have a new blog and am still trying to figure it out....compared to blogspot this is pretty complicated and I'm pretty sure google has it's fingers in everything on the internet because I can't seem to leave replies with my new blog name.....let's see if signing out of google and signing into wordpress works....nope...I'm logged in with google and you can't go to my blog from there.....

ReplyDeleteSuz, I loved this post. ((((((((((((((( Suz )))))))))))))))
ReplyDeleteSuz, this hit home with me last night. Thank you for your honesty and encouragement. Adore you!
ReplyDeleteYour words are such magic and basil has that effect on me...when I brush it in the garden. Or the delight of tomato plants!
ReplyDeleteOh yes...fresh tomatoes, the smell of the stem part, takes me right back to my Uncle's garden, playing with my cousin, in the country (well, it was "the country" then). And fresh pepermint does it for me...used to pick a sprig right through the fence to my neighbor's yard when I was little. :)
