magpie tale #95

This morning, on my way into the hospital, I saw a hawk swoop down, talons out.
He dropped onto the ground
wings spread
and just as quickly, I saw him ascend into the large burr oak,
rabbit dangling from his claws
and I cried inside for the end of this life
even knowing it brought life to another
I despise pain...especially in others
I felt as helpless as a man sunk in sand up to his armpits
Rescue boat in sight
sand swirling around me drawing me in deeper

  1. Yes, pain is hard to deal with, and the result is feeling stuck and unable to take any action. You caught that feeling beautifully, Suz.
It's a hard prompt, to depict, to connect to everyday life. You nailed it.

  4. this is extremely real, Suz. No doubt from recent experiences, but still, this is one of your best. That last line is the connect and disconnect to pain and respite. You describe dichotomy perfectly in this piece. Love this!

  6. it is a cycle...essential..and we are helpless before it or we accept it...i do hate to see others in pain though so i resonate...

  8. You must be careful to stay above the pain. And always see the light.

    Take care Suz.

  10. Hawks do what they were born to do - that's a cause for joy, not despair, in my book!

  13. Oh, Suz...this is such a beautiful and painful description of that feeling of wanting to help, to change the story, but being completely powerless.

I felt as if I were stuck in the sand.

  14. Living here with nature all around us, I see this part of life with animals and their survival. It's the way of all things.
Man doesn't understand the consequences of death. Man is afraid of what he can't control.
We all wait... watching the hawk flying overhead.
    That picture frightens me too.

  18. This picture seemed to show exactly what you are experiencing right now. And you depicted it perfectly with your words. I'm hoping that you will be able to reach the boat soon and float away in safety.

  19. Nice, Suz...a while ago I watched as a Hawaiian Hawk carried a baby Hawaiian Mynah bird across our yard. I felt so bad as the baby cried to be rescued..if I could only have jumped about 4 feet off the ground I could have saved it..so close, yet so far away...

  20. Your image is fixed in my brain - filed with the sad events of the day. The cooper hawk kills the cardinals that I feed, the sparrows. Nature is cruel, yes? But ever so magnificent and irreplacable.
